Johnnie Walker In Depth
In the early 19th century, whisky was widely consumed in Scotland, but was inconsistent in production and taste. John Walker, a grocer in Kilmarnock, began to blend whiskies for consistent quality, and Johnnie Walker was born.
Walker’s son Alexander released the first commercial blend in 1867, convincing ship captains to carry bottles abroad to spread the word.
Alexander also switched to the square bottle to avoid breakage overseas, and the slanted label to make the brand stand out.
There are a handful of Johnnie Walker Houses—exclusive luxury clubs with membership by invitation only. Members have the chance to craft a personal Johnnie Walker blend, in a bottle emblazoned with their signature.
