The Story Behind The Bourbon Manhattan

For any beloved classic cocktail, creative variations in style and flavor are bound to be mixed up by inventive mixologists. This rings true for the Manhattan, first mixed together in the late 1800s in its namesake New York City borough. With riffs that include everything from bacon to tangerine and honey, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the classic beverage.

Then there’s the Bourbon Manhattan, a riff on the original which, as its name suggests, swaps rye for bourbon. The cocktail otherwise employs the same ingredients of sweet vermouth and bitters (Angostura is recommended) and is served in a simple coupe glass. For the final touch, add a Maraschino cherry garnish on top.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura
  • Garnish: cocktail cherry

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled.
  2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  3. Garnish with a cherry.
