The Story Behind The Millionaire's Holiday

Sometimes, a decadent drink is all it takes to feel like a million bucks. And not many cocktails will send your spirits soaring quite like the Millionaire’s Holiday, an original from the team at NYC’s Lullaby.

What turned out to be an absolutely delicious drink actually resulted from a bottle-grabbing free-for-all at the bar. “We threw all our favorite ingredients together and tucked them under a bunch of egg and cheese,” Lullaby general manager Daniel O’Grady says. “But the drink really just came from wanting to make a cocktail that fit the winter season, so a flip made sense.” For those unfamiliar with flips, they’re a family of cocktails characterized by the inclusion of a whole egg — yolk and all. Due to the fact that this cocktail contains both a whole egg and mascarpone, feel free to do a dry shake before adding any ice. However, a wet shake done with enough vigor will do the trick as well, hence why the folks at Lullaby suggest shaking this one “really, really hard.”

With a nine-ingredient spec, the Millionaire’s Holiday may not be a low-lift drink, but the final product shows how layering myriad ingredients can amount to something magnificent. There’s the peaty smoke from the Scotch, the nuttiness from the sherry and orgeat, and spicy sweet notes from the rum, rye, and cinnamon syrup. Finally, the egg and mascarpone tie it all together with a luscious, velvety mouthfeel.

Ingredients

  • 3 drops saline solution
  • 1 fat bar spoon mascarpone
  • 1 whole egg
  • ¼ ounce cinnamon syrup
  • ¼ ounce orgeat
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • ½ ounce rye
  • ¼ ounce amontillado sherry
  • ¼ ounce peated Scotch
  • Garnish: grated chocolate and nutmeg

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake really, really hard until chilled.
  2. Double-strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass, leaving a ¼-inch washline.
  3. Garnish with grated chocolate and nutmeg.
