Meerlust Estate Rubicon 2015 Review

This winemaker came back from Bordeaux to Stellenbosch aiming to replicate the wines he had just enjoyed and made a Bordeaux blend in his homeland. The result was a wine that was very different than what he was looking to accomplish but one that helped define South African wine going forward. The nose is all bramble fruit and licorice with hints of plum, cassis and a kind of cardamom incense all wrapped up in youthful, chewy tannin. This is a wine that will age another five years or so and it's affordable enough to buy a few and see how it evolves.
