Castagnoli Chianti Classico 2016 Review

Syrah is one of the grapes allowed in the Chianti blend after the approved 80% of Sangiovese. This wine has mostly Sangiovese with 10% Syrah. It is a soft, voluptuous wine with a dark purple hue and a broad palate with well integrated tannin. The acidity is just right, not allowing the wine to weigh down the palate. All nice things. The only set back is that the small amount of Syrah starves the wine of it’s classic Chianti style as the cherry gives way to blackberry preserves and the earth tone is muted somewhat by the vanilla. If you are a new world wine lover and want to experience Chianti, this is a good starting point, although a little lighter than you're used to, to ease into the more classic style.
