Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges 2021
Review
Bernard Baudry grew up in a winemaking family, so it was almost inevitable. After five years in Burgundy, he returned to the Loire Valley in 1975 to acquire two hectares. Today his son Matthieu, who also studied in Burgundy but also in Australia and California, manages the winery’s 32 hectares — 90 percent of which is Cabernet Franc, Chinon’s signature red wine grape. This bottle shows years of skill and attention to detail with textbook Cab Franc savory notes on the nose like cracked black and pepper and brambles. This often aggressive characteristic is carefully woven into the wine, letting the earthy fruit tones come to the fore. The palate brings aromas of roasted peppers and spiced meat mingling with a medium-deep core of fruit as it opens. A very balanced and very nice wine.
