The Story Behind The Gin and Juice 2.0
Mixing gin with various juices is not exactly a 20th century invention; I imagine it’s been happening since gin was first distilled in the early 17th century. Many bartenders will attest to the fact that this simple cocktail experienced its most recent resurgence in January of ’94, after the release of Snoop Dogg’s debut album, Doggystyle. Ever since, bartenders have been experimenting with different juice combinations and looking for the most unique and intriguing combinations to entice their customers.
Considering that gin, like most spirits, was originally distilled for medicinal purposes, we can think of it as one of the healthier cocktails to enjoy. And as our friends and family begin their January juice cleanses, why not start our own Gin and Juice cleanse? While wandering around the market I perused the fresh produce section and gathered a selection of fruits and vegetables, along with some herbs and roots to give the libation an extra kick.
Finding the right balance is crucial when combining all of these ingredients, and I recommend adding small quantities until you find the flavor that’s pleasant to your palate. My green juice consisted of parsley, ginger, green apples, celery, cucumber, lime, and kale. And if you’re not in the mood to make your own veggie combo at home, you can take the easy way out by purchasing your favorite green concoction and mixing away!
- 1.5 ounces of gin
- 4-6 ounces of green juice
- 1 teaspoon of agave syrup or to taste
- 1 cup of ice
- Garnish: sliced cucumber
- Add gin, green juice, agave, and ice to a cocktail shaker.
- Shake mixture then pour into serving glass.
- Garnish with a slice of cucumber.
