The Story Behind The Butter Makes It Better

When it comes to hot and buttery cocktails in the winter, the Hot Buttered Rum is likely to be the first cocktail that comes to mind. Rather than using rum as its base, this riff, developed by bartender Ali Martin at NYC’s The Up & Up, features three types of alcohol — brandy, tequila reposado, and curaçao — to give the holiday favorite a new twist. The resulting drink is rich, complex, and perfect on a chilly winter afternoon.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ ounces Boulard Calvados
  • ½ ounce Centenario Tequila Reposado
  • ½ ounce Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao
  • ½ ounce Demerara syrup
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash saline
  • 5 ounces hot water
  • ½ tablespoon butter
  • Garnish: clove-studded orange slice

Directions

  1. Add all liquid ingredients to an Irish Coffee mug and stir in the butter.
  2. Garnish with a clove-studded orange slice. Serve immediately.
