Nathan K. Dry Riesling 2019 Review

Nathan Kendall was always going to come back to the Finger Lakes. He spent years traveling the world, learning the art of winemaking from cool-climate vineyards. From California to Oregon and off to New Zealand and Australia with a stop in Germany, he took what he learned and brought it back to the shores of Seneca Lake. He focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wine, but also the emerging Finger Lakes' darling Riesling. Nathan’s skills shine through in his offering from old-ish vines (20-40 years old). This Riesling is a study in balance for this grape. The nose is waxy with bright green apples and the earthiness of orchard fruits. Savory notes of flecked pepper almost bounce off the bracing acidity that wafts up before you take a sip. The tannins on the palate are a frame or threshold the natural acidity bangs up against but never penetrates giving this wine wonderful textural complexity. It’s such a balanced wine, and its drinkability borders on epic.
