Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet Hervé Souhaut Syrah 2022
Review
Among some of the most famous hills in France’s Northern Rhône, Hervé Souhaut farms five hectares of land in the town of Arlebosc, just opposite of Hermitage and St. Joseph. Here, Souhaut makes wines that are ready to drink in their youth, while still maintaining the ability to age. This wine is a great example of Syrah's inherent wonder, and the price point is almost as impressive as the wine.
Souhaut works with subtlety and finesse, coaxing out fresh yet savory flavors through fermentation with whole grape bunches and semi-carbonic maceration. This strategy leads to uniquely delicate and balanced wines. This bottle has a deep and soulful nose that draws you in with concentrated fruit notes. The bright fruit is complemented by hints of spiced meat, cracked peppercorns, and a melange of cooking herbs. The palate is an almost perfect representation of Northern Rhône Syrah. There's a medium depth of fruit with grippy tannins and stunning acidity.
