Chateau Rollan de By, Medoc Cru Bourgeois 2014
Review
Cru Bourgeois is a tricky beast. The history of this category is wacky and contentious at times, and not all are awesome (but a lot are), and some are more expensive than they need to be. But here is a safe space, right here in this bottle. It is an excellent example of a great blend from Bordeaux, and is a rogue of the left bank, with a dominant Merlot blend instead of Cabernet. The nose is rich and juicy with soft plum and black berry fruit along with forest floor (earthy dead leaves in the fall). The mouthfeel is comfy, with a good grip of tannins that only goes so far so as not to overwhelm the round fruit. It's a great wine and under $30.
