The Story Behind The Flaming Hot Toddy

With New Year’s festivities come and gone, January is in full swing and we’re ready to start hibernating. Winter’s officially arrived, chilly temps are here for the foreseeable future, and we’re craving something boozy and warm. While mulled wines and buttered rums sound delicious, we don’t entirely want to sabotage our half-broken resolutions, so we’re looking to one drink and one drink alone to keep us bundled and boozed up all winter long. It is the OG winter beverage: the hot toddy. This healthier, lower-calorie option is not just a better choice for your diet; some might actually say it’s good for your body (obviously, it's good for your soul). With antioxidant-packed ingredients like honey and cinnamon, plus hot water and a shot of whiskey, you’re basically inoculating yourself against the flu. We’re taking this classic favorite and turning up the heat with our Flaming Hot Toddy. We chose to use Spitball, a regional cinnamon-flavored whiskey that we highly recommend, though Fireball works just as well. Instructions remain the same: Heat. Pour. Feel the warmth. Blanket, slippers, and a good book recommended.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces hot water
  • 1 bag herbal tea
  • 1 ounce Spitball or Fireball cinnamon whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 lemon wedge

Directions

  1. Heat water and pour into mug.
  2. Steep herbal tea for 3 minutes.
  3. Remove tea bag and add honey, stirring until dissolved.
  4. Add cinnamon whiskey, squeeze lemon wedge, and stir together.
  5. Feel the warmth.
