Villa Calcinaia Casarsa Rosso IGT 2014 Review

In the 1960’s Villa Calcinaia thought they had planted Malvasia Nera in their Casarsa vineyard but it was actually Merlot. Instead of ripping up the vines they decided to keep the Merlot and make a varietal wine to stand beside their Chianti instead of utilizing it as a blending grape and the results are awesome. This sustainable, cement-fermented, French oak aged Merlot is a treat with earthy blackberry and floral notes. It is full bodied and rich, but with excellent balance; so much so that the high alcohol is not perceived. If there ever was a Merlot for a meal, this is it.
