Paritua Syrah 2015 Review

While the US market has long been dominated by New Zealand exports of overproduced, ripe Sauvignon Blanc and limp Pinot Noir, there are world-class wines produced in Kiwiland that have slowly started to make their way stateside. This elegant Syrah is a testament to the quality and diversity of New Zealand’s wine regions. Grown and produced in Hawkes’ Bay on the North Island, this cool-climate Syrah smells a bit like opening a bag of black licorice in a field of violets. When you sip, you’ll notice flavors of cherries and fresh plum. It’s a dry, medium bodied wine with a long finish and soft tannins. If you like elegant French Syrah, you’ll love this bottling. If you prefer big, Aussie or California Shiraz/Syrah, this is not what you’re looking for. Pair it with roasted meats and/or mushrooms.
