Segura Cava

We tend to associate Champagne with celebratory events like New Year’s, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include Cava as well. Made using the same method – known as Méthode Champenoise or the traditional method – Cava is similar to Champagne in both style and quality, but is often a fourth of the price.

But just because Cava is more affordable than Champagne doesn’t mean it is less worthy of toasts, or that its bottles are any less show-stopping. This is a wine made in Spain after all, and the Spanish tend to do some very daring things when it comes to bottle design. Take this bottle of Segura Viudas Heredad Brut Reserva as a prime example.

The sheer weight of this bottle, thanks to its elaborate metal base and metal insigna, is enough to make a party statement, but the wine inside that bottle holds up as well.

In the glass the wine smells floral with touches of honey and lemon. In the mouth the bubbles are fine and tight, with the rich honey as the first note, followed by a nice dose of acidity and smoky minerality.

It’s the perfect wine for toasting, and because of the very affordable price point, you can afford to buy more than one bottle and still have the appearance of royalty, thanks to the over-the-top bottle.
