Garnacha, or Grenache as they say in France, is finding its way onto more and more people’s tables, and well it should. It often delivers both the fruit-forward, acidity-driven notes people crave, along with those subtle, mouth-drying tannins. And it’s hard not to love the Garnacha coming out of Spain. Not only is it insanely affordable, it’s usually quite a good value for the money as well.
A great example of this value is Las Rocas de San Alejandro 2013 Garnacha, retailing at only $9.99 but delivering much more than that. Pouring a deep purple, the second the wine hits the glass it immediately gives off aromas of rich dark-red fruit and vanilla, with a strong amount of earth in the background. On the palate the acidity arrives first, with the tannins drying out the mouth as the wine is swallowed.
It’s an easy-drinking red that would be perfect for takeout, or even on its own while relaxing at the end of a long day. It delivers much of what people looking for fruiter reds want, but with a bit more balance and finesse.
