Styles of wine can have the tendency to come and go according to the season – and it’s no real surprise, since temperature and environment have a massive influence on our cravings. But sometimes that means we don’t talk about wines that are great year round, simply because we associate them most directly with a specific time of year. Champagne is a huge victim of this. Around November and December, there are more Champagne articles and reviews than most people know what to do with, but when summer comes, it’s crickets. But Champagne should be a staple no matter what season it is – as a French friend of ours is fond of saying, a bottle of Champagne should always be in the fridge of every gentleman, you never know when there is an occasion worth celebrating.
And June is a month that is full of occasions for celebrating, specifically the occasion of two people committing to spend the rest of their lives together. That means there are lots of toasts, and these toasts more often than not contain Champagne.
Champagne is often known for its steep price tag, but you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a good bottle. One of the more affordable Champagnes is Laurent-Perrier Brut L.P. which comes in at around $30. Celebrating the fact that the week is almost over we thought was as good a celebration as any to pop the bottle we had in the office, so that’s exactly what we did.
The wine poured out a pale yellow with incredibly tight bubbles and wonderful aromas of apricots and citrus. It was perfectly balanced, a nice amount of acidity combined with just a touch of sweetness, and the bubbles were very fine and effervescent. It would be the perfect wine for oysters, though it was also pretty gulpable on its own. We all agreed we’ll definitely keep a bottle or two of it in our fridge this summer.
