Clos de los Siete 2012 - A Wine For Burgers

This weekend is a time for grilling, and that means Hamburgers – nothing is more American than hamburgers. The hamburger has taken on almost mythic status in American cuisine, and there are a plethora of gut busting ways to make one. The simple cheeseburger has been usurped by the bacon, egg, sauteed mushrooms and gruyere burger, or the burger topped with pulled pork and BBQ sauce. Yep, we go big on the Fourth of July here in America, and that means we need an equally big wine to stand up to all those flavors.

As we’re celebrating the formation of America, we wanted a wine that was distinctly new world. While we could head to California for a cornucopia of choices, we instead ventured south to Argentina, where currently many of these big, bold wines on American tables are coming from. The wine we selected was Clos de los Siete, a Bordeaux style blend that is dominated by 57% Malbec combined with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. A big, rich wine perfect for the all-American burger.

Poured into the glass the wine was dark and inky and gave off aromas of prunes, olives, tobacco and vanilla. It’s a big wine, at 14.5% alcohol, and on first smell the burning sensation of alcohol was definitely present on the nose, though it did blow off after a minute or so in the glass. When we took a sip, all of us experienced the tannins immediately, but they weren’t aggressive, signaling this would be a very good wine with the rich meat. Due to its time in oak, it was also incredible smooth, with a small amount of acidity present just as we swallowed.

This isn’t a wine for everyone, it’s big, heavy and definitely makes its presence known. That being said, this is the exact type of wine many people think of when they think of a rich, luscious red to accompany a steak dinner. We’d just recommend drinking it with food, alone would be a bit too much.
