The Story Behind The White Negroni

The origin story of the classic Negroni cocktail is split between two possible scenarios: Either General Pascal Olivier de Negroni de Cardi or Count Camillo Negroni is responsible for the beloved Italian cocktail.

The history of the White Negroni, however, is much clearer. According to Robert Simonson, two inventive mixologists, Nick Blacknell and Wayne Collins, created the bittersweet cocktail in 2001 while on a trip to France for an international drinks competition — substituting Suze and white vermouth for the Campari and sweet vermouth typically used in a traditional Negroni. The White Negroni retains the bitterness of its classic counterpart, but it’s distinguished by heavier floral aromatics, lighter color and flavor, and a touch of sweetness. Perfect for hot days or before a meal, this simple, three-ingredient cocktail is sure to please.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce gin
  • 1 ounce gentian liqueur (such as Saler’s or Suze)
  • 1 ounce vermouth blanc
  • Garnish: lemon zest

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice.
  2. Strain into a rocks glass over a large cube.
  3. Garnish with lemon zest.
