The Story Behind The Cinnamon-Smoked Screwdriver

We’ve all sipped on a Screwdriver at one point in our lives. (If we were really adventurous, maybe we added grenadine and made it a Vodka Sunrise.) I’ve decided to bring some holiday flavor to this  two-ingredient classic I enjoyed frequently as a college student. I bought a little extra balance with triple sec and introduced an additional aroma to the drink with smoked cinnamon.

I think my favorite piece of history with this cocktail is that one of the suggested origins, of which there are many, is that American oil workers who were out in the middle of nowhere would use their screwdriver to mix their vodka and orange juice, giving the cocktail its name.

Whether you stir yours with a spoon, swizzle, or any other household tool, I’m sure we can all agree that this simple spinoff is delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
  • ½ ounce triple sec
  • 2 ounces orange juice (or to your taste)

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in a rocks glass with ice.
  2. Stir quickly to mix and chill.
  3. Garnish with cinnamon.
  4. Torch garnish if possible.
  5. Enjoy!
