The Story Behind The Blackberry Fig Smash

Figs are an underutilized cocktail ingredient. Until a couple of years ago, I’d never cooked or made anything with figs. I think that’s because I never really saw figs proudly displayed at a grocery store. If you follow my weekly cocktails here at VinePair, you know that I typically use fresh produce in my drinks. So if I don’t see it in the market, there’s a good chance I’m not using it! However, my lack of fig sighting was changed for the better yesterday, when I stopped by Trader Joe’s. Lo and behold, they not only had figs, they had three different fig varieties to choose from! I knew I had to take some home.

For today’s cocktail, simply chop up a single fig and blackberries, then add them to the shaker with ice, lime juice, agave nectar, and tequila. Shake these all together and serve over ice. If blackberries aren’t your thing, use strawberries instead. If you’re like me and you never really got into figs, this cocktail is the perfect elixir to make you think twice about what could be a potential cocktail ingredient. Don’t be scared – get creative!
