While deep-diving amidst the annals of Twitter, which some might consider akin to modern anthropology, and is maybe as close as you can or would want to get to discovering the origin of contemporary verbiage in society, I found this: Although it lacks the bare-teeth bite of today’s formulation — I need caffeine to function — the […]
You ever read any Greek mythology? No? O.K., then have you ever seen the movie 300? Mythology is kind of like that, except instead of Gerard Butler sexily kicking a guy down a well, there’s bestiality and lots of complicated riddles. It took humans a long time to invent mini-golf, so for like 10,000 years […]
In my capacity as a podcast host, there are a number of not-overly-fun things that I have to do regularly. It ain’t all mattress ads and groupies, you know? It’s hard work. Well, it’s work anyway. O.K., it’s not work, either. I don’t know what it is. Sorry. It’s something, though. Staying up late is […]
It brings me no pleasure to tell you this, sincerely. I mean, I can be a bit of a pill at times; I know that. Hell, maybe I’ve even delighted in giving a bit of bad news a few times in my life. I don’t know! I’m not perfect. I’m barely even good. This is […]
The thing that has stuck with me the most from our tour through the beer advertisements of yesteryear, outside of an intense curiosity about which prehistoric animal Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble would cruelly enslave in order to keep their draft beer cold, is a latent affection for Michelob’s iconic teardrop bottle. I’m certainly no […]
Last week, just for fun, I flew out to San Francisco to putter around on their trolleys and trains and busses and so forth. If you’ve never been to the Bay Area, or even if you have, I’d like to tell you some of the things they have out there, because I was frankly pretty […]
Here’s a theoretical question for you to roll around the old noodle: If you vividly remember a weird movie trailer, or a Simpsons joke, or a funny commercial from childhood, but are completely unable to find a trace of it on YouTube, did it ever truly air? Perhaps not.
One town over from me, there used to be a terrific little Mexican place with some of the best blue corn tortillas I have ever had. Technically, the menu said it was a New Mexican restaurant, but I don’t think I ever asked if that meant the cuisine was from the state of New Mexico, […]
I’ve recently been re-watching ”The Cornetto Trilogy.” It’s a terrific series of farcical British genre spoofs from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. One thing I love about the series is the feeling that I’m getting a small taste of authentic British culture, a great deal of which comes from ubiquitous scenes set pieces anchored to a corner pub.
