When European settlers came to America, they brought grapevines along with them, but these vines simply did not take to the new environment. Settlers then tried pivoting to making wine with indigenous grapes, but they weren’t big fans of how the resulting wines tasted. So they continued to plant their Vitis vinifera grapes regardless, and eventually, Mother Nature worked her magic. The European grapes suddenly started cross-pollinating with indigenous varieties, thus creating hybrids.

While hybrid grape varieties helped shape American drinking culture during the nation’s infancy, they’ve drifted in and out of the limelight ever since. These days, however, we’re finally embracing hybrids like we never have before. Today on “Wine 101,” Keith discusses phylloxera, grafting, vegetative propagation, and all things hybrids. Tune in for more.
