In last week’s installment of “Wine 101,” Keith explained how Château Haut-Brion reinvented Bordeaux wine. Thanks to the chateau, bold, inky wines grew in popularity, replacing the lighter style for which Bordeaux had been known. The move didn’t just change consumers’ flavor preferences in the region — it changed the worldwide palate for wine. Now, a luxurious, Bordeaux-style red is a profile that many winemakers, particularly those in Napa, continue to emulate today. But that wasn’t the only lasting effect Haut-Brion had on the wine world.

Today on “Wine 101,” Keith finishes the story of Château Haut-Brion. He dives into the opening of the first wine bar and publishing of the first wine tasting notes, both associated with the historic producer.

“Wine 101” was produced, recorded, and edited by yours truly, Keith Beavers, at the VinePair headquarters in New York City. I want to give a big old shout-out to co-founders Adam Teeter and Josh Malin for creating VinePair. Also, Darby Cicci for the theme song. And I want to thank the entire VinePair staff for helping me learn something new every day. See you next week.
