When people talk about their favorite places to drink, most of the time it’s about what the vibes were like. In winery tasting rooms, one of the easiest ways to throw those vibes off is by having the somm give an unprompted seminar every time a new wine hits the glass.
What too many wineries don’t realize is that once a customer walks through their door, that guest is already committed to spending money. Is it not enough to just pour different wines and let the guest enjoy them? Spare us on the tasting notes and terroir — let the wine do the talking.
On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam and Zach propose that wineries focus much less of their guest experience on wine education and inundating the guest with information, and much more on just pouring them the wine and getting out of the way. The notion that most tasting room visitors are there to be educated was perhaps never particularly true, but certainly isn’t at the moment. Tune in for more.
