Kosta Browne is one of the most recognizable names in Sonoma County winemaking today. Founded by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne in 1997, the winery has since made a name for itself among California’s rich market for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
In 2018, Duckhorn Wine Company acquired Kosta Browne, and the following year, Julien Howsepian was named winemaker. Since then, the portfolio has seen massive growth — both domestic and international. Under Julien’s leadership, Kosta Browne expanded beyond California to Oregon and beyond the U.S. to plots in famed Burgundian villages.
On this special episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Zach speaks with Julien about the iconic California producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They discuss how Kosta Browne grew its portfolio and looked to explore various parts of California through its winemaking and how it turned to Burgundy in the last half-decade or so. What are some of the opportunities and challenges that come with making wine in two different countries on two different continents?
