America is thirsty for craft spirits. There are more than 1,500 craft distilleries in the United States as of August 2017, up 20.8 percent from the year prior, according to the Craft Spirits Data Project, a joint venture from Park Street, American Craft Spirits Association, and IWSR.

In late 2017, the Project shared its Annual Craft Spirits Economic Briefing. It’s a heady document with nearly 50 pages of charts, graphs, and “key messages” detailing growth percentages, sales figures, and more.

We used data from that document to map the states with the most craft distilleries going into 2018. California leads the way with 148 craft distilleries; tiny Rhode Island has the least with just two craft distilleries. While that might suggest that large geographic area is the key to amassing distilleries, the data suggests otherwise: New York has the second-most distilleries in the U.S., while enormous, albeit sparsely populated Alaska has just 10. Wyoming and Colorado are nearly the same size, but the latter has 80 distilleries to Wyoming’s eight.
