You’re tired, have a lot of work to do, and you need a quick pick me up. What do you grab: an espresso, or a drip coffee? Naturally, you want the one with more magical caffeine in it. But do you know which one that is?

It’s drip coffee. Well, it’s drip coffee if you want to consume the most total caffeine. The average 8 ounce cup of drip coffee has between 65 to 120 milligrams of caffeine. That’s a big range, but expect something from your local shop to be on the higher side, while the watery liquid from the deli to be on the lower side. The average 2 ounce espresso shot, on the other hand, only has 80 milligrams of caffeine.

Of course, when you compare the caffeine concentration and not just the total amount of caffeine in a typical drink, espressos are by far more powerful. They also go down a lot quicker. But when you’re in need of some caffeine — and as much as possible — choose drip coffee over espresso.
