The Espresso Martini is one of the most popular cocktails of today. The modern classic — featuring vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and simple syrup — has solidified itself as a go-to for partygoers and casual sippers alike. And with the high demand for Espresso Martinis at every bar and brunch destination comes the question of how prices for the cocktail compare across the U.S.
To track the current state of Espresso Martini prices across the country, VinePair tapped insights company Ground Signal to find the coffee cocktail’s average cost in each state. Ground Signal — which provides artificial intelligence-powered data to help beverage-alcohol brands to boost their on-premise sales — surveyed menus across the country to compare how the on-premise price for the drink varies state-by-state.
Hawaii leads the U.S. with the most expensive Espresso Martini on average at $16.92. Though it’s the only state to commercially produce coffee, goods in Hawaii are generally more expensive as shipping commodities to the island racks up costs. Just behind it is New York at $16.03. The two are the only states with average Espresso Martini prices above $16. Rounding out the top five are Nevada ($15.94), California ($15.57), and Washington, D.C. ($15.38).
The average cost for the classic cocktail across the entire U.S. is $14.38, and only 15 states post a mean price above the national average.
So, which states shake up the most affordable Espresso Martini? Oklahoma takes home the title, with an average cost of just $12.06, with South Dakota ($12.40) and Iowa ($12.43) claiming the second and third spots. Rounding out the five least-expensive states for the coffee cocktail are Nebraska and Mississipppi, where it costs $12.50 on average.
Ground Signal also found the brands for vodka — which is the spirit of choice in 90 percent of the country’s Espresso Martinis — most common in each state. Tito’s was the top vodka brand in 29 states, with Ketel One representing the top pick in 17 states. Stoli was the go-to in five states, and Absolut in one.
