15 Beautiful Illustrations Of Bordeaux’s Famous Chateaux From 1867

While we were researching our infographic on Bordeaux’s five famous first growths we worked our way through some fascinating books from the nineteenth century — including a text prepared in advance of The International Exposition of 1867. That book, Charles de Lorbac’s Les Richesses Gastronomiques de la France: Les Vins de Bordeaux profiles all of Bordeaux’s classified wineries. The profiles are accompanied by beautiful illustrations of the chateaux, drawn by Charles Lallemand (as far as we know not the Charles Lallemand who attempted to colonize Texas for France).

Below are fifteen carefully enhanced illustrations of the five first growths, along with the ‘super seconds,’ and other famous wineries in the Médoc (although Château Haut-Brion is included here, no other wineries beyond the Médoc were profiled in the original text).
