The Calling Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2019
Review
Jim Nantz and Peter Deutsch met at a dinner in Connecticut and embarked on a journey to make great wine while paying tribute to their fathers who helped them on their life journeys. Their goal was to work with the best fruit they could find in the Sonoma region, so they brought on James MacPhail, a winemaker who has been making wine in the area since the early aughts and has formed deep connections over the years. James's skills are blatantly evident in their Dutton Ranch (a family synonymous with Sonoma wine) Chardonnay. He has a light touch, and this wine shows it with a soft and welcoming buttery nose flecked with wet stone. There are also whispers of lemon curd and honeysuckle teasing the senses. This gives an old school Cali Chard vibe that has seen an impeccable upgrade. The acidity is plentiful and grips the palate keeping the oak in check and offering a soft balance. This wine shows a near-perfect balance between richness and crispness.
