Long Meadow Ranch Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Review
This is a lively and expressive Cabernet from a notable Napa Valley winery. The color is very dark, but the aromas are elegant and nuanced, without any heavy-handed or alcohol-driven notes that you might expect from such a dark-colored wine. Aromas include ripe blackberry fruit and brambles, along with cocoa powder and a hint of fresh mint. When first opened, our panel found the wine to be quite savory and pleasantly textured, but tight and lacking fruit flavors. After an hour of decanting, the tannins seemed to soften and the fruit flavors intensified to an exhilarating torrent of blackberries and cassis. At 13.5% ABV, this wine is elegantly balanced and highly flavorful, but not overwhelming - qualities that have become difficult to find in $50+ Napa Cabs, which often sacrifice balance for brute force. Fans of nuanced, high-end Cabernet will be very pleased with this bottling.
