Burgess Cellars 'Contadina' Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Review
In the 1970s Tom Burgess established his winery on vineyards that had been planted in the late 19th century. Burgess became a training ground for winemaking greats in Napa, including Warren Winiarski and Mike Grgich. With that kind of cachet and with winemaker Bill Sorenson sticking around for 41 vintages (the longest gig in Napa history) you know they are doing something right. Now with winemaker Meghan Zobeck at the helm, the winery is transitioning to regenerative agriculture.
This Cab has some age on it and it shows in the glass. It’s still dark around the edges but the fruit on the nose has evolved into more refined aromas like rosemary and roasted prunes drizzled with thick, aged balsamic vinegar. The mouthfeel has reduced to absolute balance with the tannin meeting the fruit on equal ground, while the wonderful natural acidity lifts everything just-so on the palate.
