If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing red wine that’s absolutely delicious and great with a variety of foods, look no further than Qupé Central Coast Syrah. In our opinion, it’s one of the best $20 Syrahs being produced in California.
Made by Bob Lindquist, the original Rhône Ranger – a nickname he was given for championing Rhône varietals in California during the early 1980s – the wine is a balanced Syrah that beautifully favors elegance over power. Part of the balance comes from the fact that two-thirds of the grapes in the bottle originate in cool climate vineyard sites, and one-third come from warmer vineyards. The result is a wine that has rich, ripe fruit flavors from the warm climate site, balanced artfully with the acidity that the cooler climate fruit provides.
In the glass the wine pours a deep purple with aromas of cherries, blueberries and spices. When the wine is consumed, you’re rewarded with flavors of ripe red fruit balanced with a nice dose of medium tannins and acidity. It’s an incredibly easy-drinking wine that will go well with our without food.
