The Story Behind The Nocturne

There’s never a bad time to enjoy a Martini riff. But the holiday season makes for the perfect time to experiment with flavors like pine, chocolate, and smoke in your build. At the Louisville, Ky., cocktail bar Epiphany, bar lead SC Baker ensures no one has to choose which flavor to enjoy by combining them all in the Nocturne.

The bittersweet and boozy cocktail is a medley of a whopping five spirits, which begins with a navy-strength gin base. The high-proof spirit imbues the cocktail with a stronger, more herbaceous backbone that’s bolstered by equal parts of pine liqueur, Fernet-Branca, and crème de cacao. Finished with a touch of mezcal espadín, the Nocturne is layered and complex, making it the perfect after-dinner drink.
