The Story Behind The Mommy Grasshopper
Retro cream-based cocktails can get a lot of flak in the modern bar world, but Ricky Ramirez is proving that the Grasshopper deserves a spot on every table once dinner’s been served. At The Mothership, Ramirez bolsters the traditionally three ingredient cocktail with an additional three spirits, resulting in a more complex take on the disco era classic. It’s a maturity Ramirez hints at in the cocktail’s cheeky name, the Mommy Grasshopper.
The Grasshopper’s standard green crème de menthe and crème de cacao still power the cocktail’s base, but the maternal version swaps out half-and-half for soy creamer, making it a bit easier on the stomach. The cocktail gets a lift from the additions of Amaro Montenegro and amaretto, which give the drink a bitter, nutty backbone that balances the sweet liqueurs.
Served in a Collins glass with ice and complete with an overproof rum float, the Mommy Grasshopper is ideal if you’re looking to enjoy a much less dense, and far boozier, version of the original.
