As bars and restaurants pivot to offering delivery and to-go orders, diners around the country are doing their bit to help their favorite local business survive. In Florida, one man took his generosity to the next level.
Last week, an anonymous veteran spent a whopping $40,000 on a bottle of 25-year-old Pappy Van Winkle, to support the Tampa-based Datz Restaurant Group, CNN reports.
In order to continue their paying staff, restaurant owners Roger and Susanne Perry listed the bottle of bourbon online, asking for $17,000. After a few failed sales attempts, a local veteran showed interest, agreeing to buy the bottle in person.
During the sale, the veteran surprised the restaurant owners by leaving a check for $40,000, instead of the $17,000 they expected. The Perrys were humbled and grateful by the generosity, which will allow them to stay open for at least another four weeks.
While the Perrys know the Veteran personally, he has asked to stay anonymous.
This isn’t the only case of a restaurant selling fancy bottles to keep their businesses afloat during Covid-19. Last month, Washington D.C.’s Jack Rose Dining Saloon took similar measures by selling off its collection of fine and rare whiskeys.
