On Friday, the American Association of Wine Economists shared a list of the top wine brands in the U.S. in 2018. This information was based on each brand’s production volume, and announced via Twitter.
As the brands were judged by quantity not quality, some may be surprised to see which brands landed the top spots on the list. In first place was college favorite Franzia, which boasts an enormous production volume. Similarly, Barefoot secured the second spot, with the two brands alone having produced nearly 400 million liters of wine.
With these results, Franzia and Barefoot together produced nearly four times the third place brand — Carlo Rossi — leaving some to wonder just how many people were really “slapping the bag” in 2018.
While Franzia walked away in 2018 with 23 million 9-liter cases produced, no one below fourth place produced more than 10 million. In fact Cook’s, the thirtieth name on the list, did not even reach 2 million 9 liter cases.
Keep reading for the full list of the top 30 brands in 2018, each of which is ranked by volume in terms of 1,000 9-liter cases produced.
