Louisana drinkers no longer need to worry about getting carded while not carrying a driver’s license, as they can now use a smartphone app as proof of age for alcohol purchases.
Introduced in July 2018, the LA Wallet app allows users to keep a valid digital copy of their driver’s license on their phone. Until recently, the app could only be used for identity verification during traffic stops. But the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) today issued a notice legally approving the app’s use for age-restricted purchases.
According to a press release, under the ATC’s new rules, bars, restaurants, and other alcohol retailers must train their employees on how to accept the digital ID, and retailers still have the right to request a physical form of identification.
LA Wallet was designed by Louisiana State Police, the Department of Public Safety, and the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). It was developed by Louisiana-based software firm Envoc.
“The future of LA Wallet provides many advantages for the citizens of Louisiana,” Envoc’s lead mobile developer, Kyle Joiner, said. “The ATC ruling is a great step toward wider adoption and acceptance statewide. It also adds to the appeal of LA Wallet in other states across the nation.”
The press release also suggests use of the app may soon expand beyond brick-and-mortar vendors. “The ATC’s approval opens the door to other age-dependent activities,” said Calvin Fabre, co-founder of LA Wallet and CEO of Envoc. “Reliable, real-time age-verification can pave the way for in-state alcohol delivery, fantasy gaming, and many others.”
