When it comes to Chilean wine, most Americans know one brand: Concha y Toro, even if they don’t know it’s from Chile. Even within the wine trade, many sommeliers and wine buyers only associate Chile with Carmenère: an interesting novelty but not necessarily the basis for a vibrant wine export industry. Yet Chile is ideally suited for growing wine grapes, with a Mediterranean climate and growing regions that, due to their isolation, have far less disease pressure than almost anywhere else on Earth.
