Dry January has gone from a dieters’ trend to a misguided attempt at proving one’s willpower. While thoughtful alcohol consumption and a general attitude of moderation are important parts of overall health, turning one month of the year into little more than a test of will has several negative consequences: It can encourage and excuse overindulgence the rest of the year; it doesn’t help build healthy habits; and it also has a significant impact on restaurants and bars, already facing a fairly bleak month.

That’s what Adam and Zach discuss on this week’s VinePair podcast: why Dry January is at best a misguided attempt at healthfulness, and how moderation will always be a better long-term plan than abstinence.
