Two years ago, partners Greg Boehm and Zachary Sharaga were getting ready to open their celebrated cocktail bar Mace in Manhattan, along with one of the five most legendary bartenders in New York, their head bartender, Nico de Soto. But Greg’s mom had an idea: Instead of rushing to get the bar open in December, why not open up a fun, holiday themed pop-up? Her thinking was, the bar can wait until January — and her son, his partner, and their bartender agreed. They designed a Christmas- themed bar with cocktails created by de Soto, and named it Miracle on Ninth Street. They filled the bar with Christmas and Hannukah decorations, blasted Christmas music on the speakers, and created craft cocktails that were a perfect fit for the season. It was an immediate smash. Lines wrapped around the block and patrons waited hours to get in.
Thanks to the crashing success, the crew decided to do it again the following year, and this time Boilermaker, another bar owned by Boehm, decided to join in on the fun. They opened Sippin’ Santa’s Surf Shack — the place Santa goes when he’s had it with the cold.
We’ve been to both, and can honestly say that nothing quite gets you into the holiday spirit like a drink in one of these establishments.
Word spread across the cocktail world and other bars asked how they could participate. The crew got together and decided to help spread joy across the cocktail world. This year, 18 cocktail bars around the world have committed to converting their establishments into Miracles or Sippin’ Santa’s Surf Shacks. The menu at each establishment is the same, with de Soto creations like the Christmapolitan, a twist on the Cosmopolitan, made with vodka, fig, and spiced cranberry sauce.
