Sullivan Rutherford Estate Merlot 2019 Review

Change is afoot at the historic, iconic, pre-gold rush Sullivan Rutherford Estate. Jeff Cole, the current winemaker, has fallen in love with the Merlot on the property. This is a land where Cab is king, but the potential of Cabernet Sauvignon’s blending partner is undeniable. Cole is now splitting these two grapes in half, giving equal real estate to both. And that’s a great idea! Because their Merlot is just damn good. Welcoming and very balanced aromas of mixed herbs and berries waft up from the glass. The palate has a subtle yet firm grip due to an expertly woven tannin structure. This wine is wonderful in its ability to have body and elegance in the same sip. Merlot can be awesome. This bottle proves it.
