Adding beer to your workout routine may sound counterintuitive, but it’s a concept that seems to be gaining traction amongst New York residents.
According to Newsday, Beer Fit Club is making exercise fun again by offering yoga at local breweries.
Founder Sophia Del Gigante credits her weight loss and a trip to San Diego, CA with the idea. “There were yoga classes at breweries, and as someone who lost 73 pounds I was looking for fitness to be more fun and accessible for people,” she told Newsday. That was four years ago and today Beer Fit Club is going strong, with regular events held at breweries and private events around Long Island.
The classes often incorporate glasses of beers as replacements for weights, though beer “sipping” is sometimes included during the workout.
Del Gigante believes that holding the workouts at local breweries versus exercise studios helps participants feel more comfortable. “With having the classes at a brewery and not a yoga studio, people aren’t scared of not being great at it,” she said.
According to the Beer Fit Club website, upcoming events include a Pumpkin Spice Booty Beercamp at the Six Harbors Brewing Company (Huntington, NY) and a Halloween Beer and Yoga event at the Great South Bay Brewing Company (Bay Shore, NY). For the latter, attendees are encouraged to wear a costume to win a prize.
