Calling all beer lovers and outdoor enthusiasts: Devils Backbone Brewing Company has announced a job opening that might just be the best combination of drinking and hiking we’ve ever seen.
From now until July 31, the Virginia brewery is taking applications for its Chief Hiking Officer (CHO) position. The unique role requires the winning candidate to hike the entire 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail this year and share some social media posts along the way. In exchange, Devils Backbone will provide delicious craft beer, gear for the journey, transit to the trailhead, and a $20,000 stipend. The brewery will also host some events along the way (while the CHO is taking a rest day).
For those brave enough to take on this task, applicants need only submit basic information and a one-minute video to be considered. But as Devils Backbone points out on the competition page, given the scale of the journey, considerable hiking experience is an absolute necessity. Social media account pages are requested, too, and don’t forget to check out the fine print, as not all state residents are eligible.
For those who plan to hike parts of the AT but aren’t ready to commit to the entire thing, Devils Backbone has another contest worth considering. The brewery also plans to give away free gear to weekend trail hikers. According to the company website: “Tell us about your 2020 outdoor goals using #SlowbyNature and #Sweepstakes for a chance to win some adventure gear. And of course, beer swag too.”
For motivation on how to take advantage of these good views and brews, watch the hype video to prepare for your application. The odds may seem slim, but just remember: it could be you.
