Though it may seem as though celebrity tequila is an entirely new phenomenon with more and more A-listers hopping on the trend as of late, the category has actually been around for decades.
The trend began in 1996, with Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo. And though The Red Rocker sold the brand to Campari 14 years later, he remains a large presence in the celebrity tequila game, launching Santo Fino in 2017.
The world of celebrity tequila has also expanded out to rappers, country singers, supermodels, and even billionaires — some of whom have even expanded into the smoky category of mezcal. Read on for a full timeline of all the celebrities who’ve dipped their toes in the world of agave spirits.
Sammy Hagar began the trend of celebrity tequila with the launch of Cabo Wabo in 1996. Though he sold the brand to Campari in 2010, he remains involved in the world of tequila to this day.
The guitarist became part owner of Casa Noble in 2011. Three years later, Constellation Brands acquired the brand, buying Santana’s stake.
Perhaps the most well-known celebrity spirits brand, Casamigos was launched back in 2013 before being sold for a whopping $1 billion to Diageo in 2017.
Launched in 2011 and acquired by Sean Combs (a.k.a. P. Diddy), DeLeon is not the only spirits brand associated with the rapper. Combs has also been the face of marketing for Ciroc Vodka since 2007.
Timberlake partnered with popular brand Sauza tequila in 2014 for this special bottling, but it appears to be discontinued.
Though perhaps not as famous a name as George Strait, Ron Snyder, former CEO of Crocs, is Código 1530’s co-owner.
Hagar launched Santo Fino with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine back in 2017. The two initially came out with the brand’s unique blend of tequila and mezcal, Mezquila. Two years later, Hagar partnered with Food Network’s Guy Fieri for the launch of Santo Fino Blanco.
