Two online American retailers, one of them selling beer, are set to endure “serious consequences” for use of offensive packaging depicting a notable Hindu deity.

The pack of beers under fire, sold at www.lostcoast.com, depicts Lord Ganesha on the label. According to India Today, the complaint found “deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs, violated the different sections of the laws of land, including 295 A and 153 A of the IPC.”

American companies have previously been in hot water over featuring Hindu Gods and religious symbols on their goods; India Times reports that Amazon was recently forced to publicly ask forgiveness for putting tricolor doormats up for sale.

It seems like some in India want a separation of church and beer.
