The Story Behind The Grapefruit Hot Toddy

Today I’m sharing a cocktail that’s sure to get you through the tail-end of winter: The Grapefruit Hot Toddy. A Hot Toddy is ideal in this frigid weather, as it serves the same role as a nice cup of hot tea but with the added warming effects of alcohol. With most Hot Toddies the primary flavor is the liquor, but in this Hot Toddy I’ve decided to make the primary flavor grapefruit instead. If warm grapefruit juice doesn’t sound super appealing, have no fear, one sip and I promise you’ll be hooked.

To accompany — and more importantly accentuate — the grapefruit in this concoction, I decided gin was the ideal spirit, as it amplifies the subtle herbal and citrus notes that are pre-existing in the grapefruit while also giving this libation the kick it needs. With so much citrus, I needed to balance out the cocktail with a bit of sweetness, and for this task I decided honey would be the perfect addition. Now with the cocktail balanced and freshly steaming, it’s time to enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 ounces of gin
  • 4 ounces of ruby red grapefruit juice

  • Garnish: slice of grapefruit

  2. Pour heated grapefruit juice into serving glass and then add gin and honey.
  3. Stir to combine and serve.
