Sure you may have had eggnog from a carton that you picked up from the grocery store with a splash of booze added to the mix, but have you ever tasted the traditional stuff? We’re talking about the recipe from the 1950s that took the holiday season by storm. Just check out the recipe below; this thing is a gluttonous monstrosity that comes in at over 400 calories a cup. So we decided to gather a bunch of people in a room and gauge their reactions. Watch the video and then, if you’re so inclined, try your hand at making the recipe on your own.

Ingredients:

  • 12 egg yolks
  • 1 pound confectioner’s sugar
  • 4-6 cups dark rum
  • 8 cups heavy cream
  • 8 to 12 egg whites
  • fresh grated nutmeg
  • cinnamon

In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks until light in color then slowly beat in the confectioner’s sugar. Add 2 cups of rum very slowly, beating constantly, cover the bowl and let the mixture stand covered for 1 hour. (At this point you could also store it overnight in the refrigerator.) Right before serving, add the remaining 4 cups of rum and 6 cups of cream, beating constantly. Beat the egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Fold the egg whites lightly into the other ingredients. Ladle eggnog from the bowl into serving glasses and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.
