The Story Behind The I’m Dreaming Of A White Russian

It’s Christmas Eve, and with the long weekend ahead, I decided to make a cocktail that’s both comforting and simplistic. The White Russian is the cocktail that most of us enjoyed when we were first learning what cocktails were – perhaps we even made a few in college – before quickly putting the drink in the tried column and subsequently forgetting all about it. But the White Russian is more than a stoner’s cocktail revitalized in 1998 by The Big Lebowski. It’s a classic, and it’s absolutely perfect this time of year.

(Fun Fact: The only reason the cocktail has the word ‘Russian’ in the name is because the drink’s main ingredient is vodka.)

Making a White Russian is as simple as combining vodka, coffee liqueur and cream (or milk) in a tumbler glass full of ice. But since it’s the holidays, let’s elevate the classic by adding peppermint extract into the mix.

I’ve found that coffee cocktails are great during the holidays because their flavors make them the perfect drink to serve at brunch, lunch or even after a big holiday dinner. So give the White Russian a second try, you won’t regret it!

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce of coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce of vodka
  • 2 ounces of cream
  • 1 ounce of milk
  • 1 dash of peppermint extract
  • 1 cup of crushed ice

Directions

  1. Add ice, coffee liqueur, and vodka to a serving glass.
  2. Stir ingredients until combined.
  3. In a separate cup, combine cream, milk, and peppermint extract.
  4. Add milk mixture to the serving glass by pouring over a spoon.
